Important Differences
Between Print and Electronic Media

Deadlines

  • A morning newspaper’s final deadline is 11 p.m.
  • Television deadlines are 10:30 a.m., 4:30 p.m. and 9:30 p.m.
  • Radio has flexible deadlines throughout the day.

Visuals

  • Newspapers are looking for an emotional still photograph that sums up the story.
  • Television is looking for action.

Interviews

  • Newspaper reporters might have questions to ask after a meeting or will call you on the telephone for a comment.
  • Television needs to interview you in person — whether it’s after a meeting or to get new information.
  • Radio needs to get a clear voice on tape and may ask to interview you in person or via telephone.

Beats

  • Newspapers generally have reporters who cover specific beats
    — schools, communities and so on.
  • Television has some beat reporters, but most are general assignment and do not specialize.
  • Radio reporters are all general assignment.

Coverage

  • Newspapers will cover most stories that have news or feature appeal.
  • Television has a smaller staff; therefore, it is more selective in its coverage.
  • Radio has the smallest staff and covers only major, hard news.
